We caught up the Miramonte High School Boys Water Polo Head Coach, James Lathrop, to see his team's road to becoming CIF Champions!
"The 2014 season was definitely a journey. We played some great water polo at times throughout the season, but struggled to be consistent with our defense at times too. One big turning point for our team was losing to Campolindo in the league match about half way through our season. The boys responded to the loss by increasing their concentration and effort. This allowed the team to play competitively against many of the top teams in the state... we revenged two earlier losses at the North vs South Challenge at Sacred Heart Prep, aided by improved defensive efforts. This showed we were on the right track. The boys really took their defensive focus to a new level once we started the NCS tournament and controlled every game. There were a few goals scored late in those games to make the score look closer than the game really was, but our defense really helped win the championship. Due to an unexpected controversy over the other NCS semi-final game we did not know who we would face in the final until the day before the game... this allowed us to concentrate on how we wanted to play as a team, rather than focus on the opponent. This proved to be an advantage as the boys executed the game plan well in the final, despite facing a tough Campolindo team that had beaten us earlier in the season. I was proud of the focus and determination that the team showed in the final game to become 2014 NCS Division I champions!"
Congratulations Miramonte and thank you coach!
