  • Blowing the Whistle for Change: Marcella Braga and the Future of Women in Water Polo

    April 15, 2026 2 min read

At KAP7, we believe the future of water polo is built not just in the pool, but in leadership, opportunity, and representation.

That’s why we’re proud to support the Women in Water Polo Leadership Programme, an initiative alongside World Aquatics focused on developing the next generation of leaders in the sport.

One of those leaders is Marcella Braga, a referee from Brazil whose journey is helping reshape what’s possible for women in water polo.

    From Player to Leader

Braga’s path into water polo started like many others, as a player. After more than a decade competing and representing national age-group teams, she transitioned into coaching before ultimately finding her calling as a referee.

Drawn to the fast pace and intensity of officiating, she embraced the challenge of making split-second decisions under pressure. Today, she stands as one of the few female referees in Brazil, and she’s determined not to be the last.

Her playing background gives her a unique edge, allowing her to read the game beyond just the rules and understand the full flow of competition.

Breaking Barriers in a Male-Dominated Sport

Water polo, like many sports, has long been dominated by men across coaching, officiating, and professional opportunities.

    Braga experienced this firsthand.

She recalls a time when male players were already being paid to compete, while women had far fewer opportunities to continue their careers.

As a referee, the challenges continued. Early in her career, she felt the need to constantly prove herself in an environment where most officials were male. But through persistence and growth, she’s built confidence and established herself on the international stage.

Her recent role officiating at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore marked a major milestone in her journey.

The Power of the Women in Water Polo Leadership Programme

The Women in Water Polo Leadership Programme brings together coaches and technical officials from around the world to:

    • Build leadership skills
    • Expand professional networks
    • Increase visibility for women in the sport

Through structured education, mentorship, and global collaboration, the programme is designed to accelerate careers and create lasting impact.

For Braga, the experience has already been transformative.

From leadership assessments to learning how to communicate across different personality types, she’s gaining tools that extend far beyond the pool deck.

    Leading the Next Generation

For Braga, this journey isn’t just about personal success.

    It’s about paving the way.

She’s focused on bringing more women into the sport in Brazil, building a stronger foundation for future players, coaches, and officials.

Her goal is simple but powerful:
to lead by example and help grow water polo in every direction.

Building the Future of Water Polo

At KAP7, we’re committed to supporting initiatives that move the sport forward.

Programs like this don’t just develop individuals, they shape the future of water polo globally.

    More leaders.
    More opportunities.
    More voices shaping the game.

And athletes like Marcella Braga are proving that the next generation of leadership is already here.
